The Super Moon Tonight

People in the Northwest Corner (and most of the Northern Hemisphere for that matter) will be treated to a light show in the skies Sunday night into Monday.  The moon will reach full stage at about 2:09pm on Sunday afternoon, August 10, and will be a supermoon, on the same day as its perigee, the point when it is closest to the earth.

This Sunday, the supermoon will be the largest and brightest of the year, being 30,000 miles closer to the earth than normal, and 12% bigger and 30% brighter than it was in January of this year.  The best time to view the supermoon will be just after sunset on Sunday evening, just as the moon is rising.

What makes this supermoon special is that it will be closely followed by a Perseids meteor shower, which is expected to be visible from August 10 through 13.  As pieces breaking off from a comet named Swift Tuttle enter the earth's atmosphere, they will create a light show visible from earth, though the moon's bright light may wash out some of the view.
