What would you do if money were no barrier? The recent $1.6 billion lottery in the USA lead to many conversations like this. People all over the country daydreaming: “what would I buy”, “what would I do”, “how would I contribute”, “how would my life change”? However money, expensive vacations and belongings are just commodities. In truth there are more important questions you should be asking yourself if you want to create your dream life.
In my career as a physician turned coach I have come to realize an interesting fact. While people may present with one problem such as a cough or indecision over a career move, what they really want deep down is a more basic need - to feel different - to feel significant and valued, to feel healthy and vibrant, to feel happy and motivated, to feel peace, joy and hope, to feel certain that they live in a world that was peaceful and fair, and so on.
10 essential questions that will transform your life
I begin each of my workshops with the following exercise. The answers can be very revealing.
Imagine for a moment that you had a magic wand, that had unlimited power (it’s a bit like winning the lottery but with less obstacles!). Think for a moment and answer the following questions. Be honest and don’t filter your responses. Write them down somewhere safe.
-
“What do I want more of?”
-
“What do I want less of?” Pause for a moment…
-
“What do I want to feel more often?”
-
“What do I want to feel less often?”Pause for a moment…
-
“What do I want to experience?”
-
“What do I want to achieve”
-
“What do I want to avoid?” Pause for a moment…
-
“What do I want to see with my own eyes?”
-
“What do I want to be remembered for?” Pause for a moment
-
Look at what you have written for the first 9 questions. “What are my 3 top priorities for change?” These might be specific answers from above or a combination of several.
