Is Your Self care a Frivolous Distraction or Non-Negotiable Necessity?

So here's a big question. Do you consider self-care to be a frivolous distraction or a non-negotiable necessity? 
 
Last Friday I recorded the second episode of The All Things Family Show, with my co-host and fellow author and coach Crystal Horton. In this show we discussed self-care in great depth. I think you'll guess that I consider it to be a non-negotiable necessity, essential for a thriving family life! 
 
 
Here are some of the things we discussed, which as you will see are relevant to everyone, not just parents.
  • Why self care is so tough as our lives are so busy. Self-care is important for health, happiness, success and relationships. Self-care is not a treat, it is essential. We must make it a priority.
  • If you are a parent, you should know that children pick up on your attention and energy, even if they don’t tell us. Even special needs children who can’t speak notice when you are stressed, not paying attention or when your energy is low.
  • Leonaura shared an idea of writing a post-it note every day with 3 things you will do for yourself. 1. For physical health. 2. For mental health. 3. For personal growth.
  • Crystal shared an idea of reading a book with friends and then going to see a movie together.  She also urged us not to feel guilty about self care. Splurge on guilt for a few minutes a day, and get those thoughts out of way, and then get on with your day.
  • Time management is very important as it will free up time for self care. You can always find 15 minutes a day on self care, you will get this time back multiple times over the day as you will be more focused and efficient.   • Multi-tasking is the enemy of efficiency.
  • Have some fun in your life!
  • Accountability is important to help you keep on track. They can nag you to look after yourself or give you some ideas and inspiration.
  • Mindfulness practice is great for self-care. Examples include mindful walking, running, yoga & meditation. Or it could be something unique to you: riding a motorbike, washing the dishes, tidying up. This can distract us from negative or distracting inner chatter. It’s good zone out for a while.
So I hope I have convinced you that self-care is essential to your health and wellbeing and you must prioritize some time for yourself!
