Looking for a job is an emotional rollercoaster! One day you feel on top of the world: you are energized, you have just met a great lead or you’ve just got an interview for that dream job with your name written all over it. The next you hit rock bottom and wonder “will I ever work again”. All that uncertainty can make it hard to stay motivated. But my friend, staying motivated is what you must do. Landing a job takes work, persistence and courage all of which are fueled by motivation.
“People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.” - Zig Ziglar
7 daily steps to stay motivated
-
Be clear about your WHY
First write down all the reasons why you’d like to land a new job: no filter. Next write down what are the consequences of not achieving getting a new job: in the next month, in the next six months, in the next year. This can be a brutal exercise BUT it is an essential step to getting clear on your WHY. Now hone in on the top FIVE reasons why you need to get a job. Review your WHY daily.
-
Address negative thinking
It’s likely that you are your own biggest critic and this negative thinking is a major motivation detractor. When you spot negative thoughts creeping in, take these steps. 1. Write down the negative thought. E.g. “I’m never going to get a job” 2. Ask yourself: is it true? E.g. “In the past I’ve always found a job and most people get another job, so this is untrue.” 3. Imagine your best friend was being negative about herself, what would you say to help her shift her thinking? E.g. “You will get another job. It may take time but it will happen: stay focused and stay positive”. Repeat this to yourself whenever this particular negative thought appears.
-
Practice positivity
Write a gratitude journal, spend time with positive people, make time for things that energize you and find a mindfulness practice that works for you.
-
Stay healthy
If you feel energetic, happy and are content with your appearance, you will be much more motivated. So spend time every day on your health: exercise, eat and sleep well, stay hydrated and on your physical appearance.
-
Get super-organized
Make a schedule and stick to it. Spend time each day: on your health, looking for new jobs, enhancing your skills, networking and doing things that make you feel good about yourself.
-
Make progress
Set small achievable goals and reward yourself when you achieve them. E.g Goal: apply for five new roles this week. Reward: have coffee with a friend.
-
Combat stress
Identify your sources and take action to reduce them and develop a stress management toolkit.
Motivation is the fuel for your job seeking journey, so make it a daily priority to stay motivated. Follow these seven steps and you will stay on top your game and increase your chances of landing your dream job.
