Encountering Possibility

This is the ascent into the self, encountering possibility just as it flowers into the actual.

—Peter Davidson

Peter Davidson was the poetry editor for the Atlantic for thirty years, and a poet himself.  These lines come from his poem, No Escape.  They evoke the experience one has placing full attention on the breath and just sitting with it, as one’s moment-to-moment existence unfolds, moving from possibility into actuality.   Perhaps you’d like to take a moment now to close your eyes, to ride the edge of the wave that is the present moment, catching each part of the breath just as it comes into being, just as it “flowers into the actual”.  And now again, this time letting go of any control of the breath, allowing it to happen when it happens, just observing with a gentle curiosity….

This week we engage as a community in Mindfulness of Breathing.  The benefits of mindfulness are most accessible if we practice every day, even for short periods of time.  We encourage you to find at least 5 minutes a day to place your full attention on the sensations that arise when you breathe:  the rise and fall of the sternum, the expansion and contraction of the abdomen, the brush of clothing against the sides of the body, the flow of air just under the nose.

Monday evening we are delighted to welcome back Dr. Bruce Singer.  Bruce is currently serving as Chief of Psychology for Crossroads Centre Antigua and remains on staff at Silver Hill Hospital.  He recently began a Twitter feed on managing chronic pain through mindfulness called @blackduckmoment.  He is working on a book of daily affirmations for people with chronic pain and he continues to present his clinical work at conferences around the country.  Dr. Singer has a long-standing personal meditation practice, and incorporates mindfulness in his work with patients.

We look forward to sitting in community with you at the usual times and places:
