World Championship Taekwondo

I have a pre-teen in the house and when the school bus pulls up, I do not know what mood I am going to get from one day to the next. Sometimes it's smiles but mainly it's homework overload followed by stomping around and stress. A good friend told me that when he was going through that phase he joined a Taekwondo class, and it really helped him.

I am so glad I took that advice. The New Canaan World Championship Taekwondo (there is also one in Norwalk) is located on Vitti Street and they provide a kids class twice a week. The group of boys and girls range from no belts (you have to start somewhere) up to black belt and the 'Masters' are fabulous. It certainly teaches discipline with all students referring to the 'Masters' as 'Sir'. It has helped my son gain strength, coordination and confidence. As parents you can watch the 45-minute sessions and see the progress. The mixed group give each other encouragement, and the 'Masters' teach in a skilled and fun manner.

The thing I love most is that you (adults can also attend) or your children don't need to be super fit and flexible - they learn that with time. I have watched tiny girl black belts break wood with their fists. It's very empowering and gratifying to watch as the progress is evident from week to week. "Tae" means "foot," "leg," or "to step on"; "Kwon" means "fist," or "fight"; and "Do" means the "way" or "discipline.

World Championship Taekwondo currently has a special trial Lesson - 3 weeks (x6 45-minute lessons) is $99 and includes a free uniform.
