New Canaan Library is pleased to welcome Peter C. Sutton, Executive Director of the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science, Greenwich, Connecticut, as guest lecturer for the 7th Annual Stoddard Art Lecture. Mr. Sutton will speak about the recent renovation and the renewed vision for the museum with his lecture titled The Bruce: Present and Future. Peter C. Sutton is Executive Director of the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut. Previous positions in his career include curatorial posts in Philadelphia and Boston, heading the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, and Senior Director of Christie’s Old Master Paintings Department. He was educated at Harvard and received a doctorate from Yale. Dr. Sutton has written extensively on Northern Baroque paintings and drawings and organized many exhibitions of Dutch and Flemish art as well as French 19th and 20th Century painting. In addition to surveys of Dutch genre and landscape painting, he has organized monographic exhibitions of Pieter de Hooch (1998), Michiel Sweerts (2002), Jan van der Heyden (2006-07), and Alfred Sisley (2017). His shows of Flemish Baroque painting include The Age of Rubens (1992) and Drawn by the Brush: Oil Sketches by Peter Paul Rubens (2004-05). Dr. Sutton has also catalogued distinguished private collections, including those of Harold Samuel (1992), Baron Willem van Dedem (2002) and the Hohenbuchau collection (2011). He is the author of the catalogue and organizer of the 2012 exhibition Drawings by Rembrandt, his Students and Circle from the Maida and George Abrams Collection. He is on the Board of the American Friends of the Mauritshuis, the Scientific Committee of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid, and the Art Advisory Committee of the King Baudowijn Foundation.
