This Moment in Movement, and This One, and This One...

“All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.”
― Martha Graham

We look forward to sitting with you in community this week, and standing with you, and walking with you….

Walking Meditation is one of a set of practices that serve as a bridge for mindfulness between “the cushion” (or chair) and life.  We practice incorporating mindfulness (placing our attention on an object of our choice for a sustained period of time nonjudgementally), while in motion, and with our eyes open (lest we bump into something!), rather than relying on our ability to find a quiet space where we can sit with our eyes closed.  By slowing down a daily activity to which we usually pay little attention, we become aware of what, how and why we’re doing something.  With that awareness, we develop the freedom to respond intentionally to what arises in life, moving from reaction to response.  Attention leads to awareness, awareness leads to choice, and choice allows us to act more wisely.  Walking meditation strengthens that “response muscle”.   Moreover, as we begin to pay close attention to what it is for us to walk, we can tune into the gross and fine muscle activity, the shift of weight and balance, the interplay with our environment.  This habit can then carry over more easily into other areas of our lives, and with it a deep appreciation for all that “works” in our lives, which serves as a very helpful balance to our typical focus on what doesn’t work.

We’ll have the choice this week to walk with great attentiveness, or to engage in mindful movement from a seated position (the raising and lowering of arms, subtle movements of the torso, flexing and stretching of toes and ankles.)  The practice is accessible to all.
