New Canaan Land Trust’s Silvermine-Fowler Preserve Officially Opens with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony October 21

Bring the whole family to experience the Land Trust’s new preserve in New Canaan’s Silvermine neighborhood along with guided walks, live music, s’mores by the campfire, food trucks, craft beer and more.

The New Canaan Land Trust invites the community to the grand opening of the new Silvermine-Fowler Preserve on Saturday, October 21st from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Timed to the peak of New Canaan’s fall foliage, this celebration of the community’s newest protected open space appeals to all ages. The afternoon event starts with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m., featuring remarks by Jim Fowler, host of the Emmy award-winning show, Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, as well as representatives from the Trust for Public Land and the New Canaan Land Trust.

Following the ceremony, an array of activities will help engender an appreciation for the wonder of this serene, unspoiled 6.5-acre property.  Guided nature walks will explore the preserve, as well as the adjoining 42 acres of woods, meadows, and wetland, under the protection of the Land Trust.  A campfire replete with s’mores will set a fitting outdoor tone.  Nick Depuy, well-known New Canaan resident and singer-songwriter, will perform. The New Canaan Nature Center’s interactive display will feature resident birds of prey and hands-on material. Wildlife in Crisis will release a few of its rehabilitated creatures, including a turtle and red-tailed hawk.  A woodcutting woodshop involving a two-man cross cut saw and firewood splitting will enthralled many. Food trucks, craft beer and wine will also be available throughout the event.

Parking and a shuttle will be available in the rear lot of the Silvermine Arts Center,1037 Silvermine Rd. The shuttle will run a continuous loop from 1:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
