Celebrate the the Start of the Holiday Season in New Fairfield

The New Fairfield Holiday Light Parade and Tree Lighting will be bringing the vibrancy of the holiday season right to the New Fairfield town center on Saturday, November 29th. “This is our 3rd year holding this event in town and it is so much fun, “says Parks and Recreation Director Linda Lull, “the holiday light parade will feature fire trucks from New York, Soutbury, Danbury, and of course New Fairfield. This is a town wide event that would not be possible without help of our volunteers and the participation of our local organizations and businesses.”

From 12:30 until 4:00 PM, the festivities will kick off with participation from local businesses. At Sarah’s Gift ‘n’ Ship, children will have their choice of one free holiday craft to make, including jingle-bell necklace and Christmas ornament (children can bring wallet size photo of themselves). Children can also participate in a free in-store scavenger hunt. For a nominal fee children can have their picture taken with the ever-popular Frozen princesses, Anna and Elsa. The proceeds will go towards buying toys for New Fairfield Social Services. At the New Fairfield Food Center, children are invited to stop in at the main entrance and enjoy a free brownie treat. Village Hardware will also be providing a special holiday treat to children. The New Fairfield Luncheonette will be serving up a free cup of steaming hot chocolate to all children between 12:30 and 2:00 PM and from 12:30 until 5:00 PM, children can get a hot chocolate and a cookie from the Goodie Shoppe for $1.50.

The entertainment will begin outside of the New Fairfield Library, where the Major Minors will be holding a special holiday performance from 1:00 – 1:30 PM. Preserve New Fairfield will have the historical homes opened on Route 37 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM and from 1:00 – 3:30 PM, the New Fairfield Historical Society will be providing refreshments and children’s crafts at the Little Red Schoolhouse.

From 12:30 – 3:30 PM, the New Fairfield Parks and Recreation and the New Fairfield Library present Santa’s Workshop and Gingerbread House. Both events were well ended last year and a lot of fun, so reservations to see Santa must be made in advance by calling (203) 312-5633. Once inside the library, children are invited to do a craft from the Friends of the Library.

New this year will be a free unicycle and juggling performance by Matica Arts from 3:00 – 4:00 PM at the New Life Methodist Church located at 1 Beaver Bog Road and Route 37, courtesy of New Fairfield Parks and Recreation. The New Life Methodist Church will be showing Charlie Brown’s Christmas at the church from 3:00 – 3:30 PM. After the daytime entertainment, you’ll want to head down to Town Hall to watch Joel from Matica Arts light up the streets in front of town hall on his unicycle.

As the day comes to a close, find a spot along Route 37 and get ready for the Holiday Light Parade. Marching at 5:00 PM, the parade will begin at the intersection of Saw Mill Road and Route 37 towards the traffic light. The parade will proceed past Town Hall and Santa will arrive to close the show and to light the holiday tree at Memorial Field.

Wind down after the parade in true holiday fashion by having some refreshments provided by Starbuck’s, Tavern on 37, sipping hot chocolate provided by the New Fairfield Booster Club and Parks and Recreation Commission, and listening to the sounds of Christmas carols at the gazebo, sung by the New Fairfield High School Chamber Ensemble. Celebrators are encouraged to bring a donation for the town’s Stuff a Truck, to be dropped off in front of Town Hall. Tis the season to be jolly and to share the spirit of the holiday with your neighbors right here in New Fairfield.
