Keeping Green | The Empire of Insects

No words could be truer, and logically many people resort to pesticide use in an attempt to solve their pest issues whether at home, in the garden, or at a business. However, have you ever noticed that logic is no defense against the empire of insects? Albert Einstein once said "logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere."  In order to defend your home or business from the empire of insects you need to see through the eyes of the pest & insect world.

Imagine the numerous routes of entry into a home. Imagine how large relatively tiny cracks and crevices must truly be. Imagine being a carpenter ant , and how each leaf touching a houses roofline is just another bridge to reach that slightly rotting wood. That sure looks like a great nesting site doesn't it? Perhaps the beautiful flowers abutting the home, they sure do look like a great food source don't they?

When you use imagination you can see there are numerous non-toxic steps that must be taken in order to help prevent pest entry. It is important that we imagine the effects of our actions on the environment and the ecosystem while planning our defense.

Minimizing pest entry or access to the home is the first step in an Eco-friendly approach to pest control. Eco-aware pest control companies such as New Fairfield's very own Blue Planet Pest Management, and large chains of home improvement stores such as Lowe's have made Eco-friendly changes to spread awareness. Lowe's has made a promise to honeybees in which they will be removing all honeybee harming plants and products. Additionally, as a part of their "Keep it Green by Going Blue" campaign, Blue Planet Pest Management also has made a 100% Non-Neonicotinoid promise.

Neonicotinoids are nicotine based pesticides, also the chemicals found in the products which Lowe's will be removing. Neonicotinoids have seen a fair share of controversy as of late due to a probable link to Honeybee Colony Collapses. Honeybees have been noted to grow addictions to these nicotine based pesticides which then draw them in and, well, do their job. These pesticides are applied to many conventional agroproducts such as grains, fruits and vegetables. Along with other products such as Monsanto's Round-Up , these pesticides are part of a growing concern for many Americans, and are a rising factor in the expansion of Organic farming.

Organic farming follows an eco-aware pest control regiment and local farmers markets such as the New Fairfield Farmers Market offer a great way to get local organic food as well as knowledge and tips from local farmers on how to grow your own food without heavy pesticide use. Who better to ask then someone local and in the field right ?

Balance is a victorious end result, and one which can be attained easily with proper planning and imagination. The goal is to keep our homes, businesses, food and environment safe. By researching reputable sources, using our imaginations, and seeking help from local professionals we are much better suited to design a better tomorrow and protect ourselves from pests at the same time.

Take the time to ask questions, do research and seek help from local professionals when needed. There are many steps we can all take to keep a healthier environment for our children's future, as well as protect our home and health today.
