Target stores announced today that the data breach previously reported as affecting perhaps 40 million debit cards, was in fact much larger, compromising almost twice as many accounts as previously reported. The store, still reeling from a sharp decline in sales from the earlier announcement, was careful to note that this was not a new breach, but was uncovered as part of the ongoing investigation. According to Target, the stolen information includes names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses for up to 70 million individuals.
Affected customers may receive an email from Target containing "steps to guard against consumer scams." In addition consumers will have three months to sign up for a year of free credit monitoring, sponsored by the store, and will not be responsible for fraudulent charges which may arise if their credit card was affected. If you believe your card was compromised, you should contact your bank but Target is also offering updates and answers to frequently asked questions about the breach on their website.
