American Red Cross Steps in to Aid New Fairfield Fire Victims

The American Red Cross is helping a family of three adults with emergency housing, food and clothing needs after a fire destroyed the home of Spendim Jusufi on Short Woods Road in New Fairfield on Monday afternoon.

Jusufi, owner of Distinctive Homes, Inc. custom built the house a mere five years ago. Though their 23 year old son was home at the time of the fire, he was alerted by smoke detectors and was able to escape before the flames leveled the house. New Fairfield Volunteer Fire Captain Kristian Ebbesen said the fire was reported as starting in the basement. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming out the front windows and racing up the back, collapsing the roof that kept them from getting inside to contain the fire.

Red Cross volunteers Amy Thomas and Jon Seaman responded to assist the family.

The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. American Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers.
