Aging in Place Presentation by Home Crew CT in Sherman Sept. 17

HOME CREW CT OFFERS MODIFICATIONS OF HOMES FOR AGING IN PLACE, TRAUMATIC INJURIES & DISABILITIES – Public Seminar Sept. 17 in Sherman

“Our home modification mission includes life enrichment for seniors and persons with disabilities, not just safety and accessibility,” explained Jim Gustin, creator and owner of Home Crew CT in Danbury. “Our goal is to provide access for people who are wheelchair dependent to be able to garden, cook, work in a home office or hobby room, and so much more. Our ambition is for people to understand that even though they may be wheelchair-bound, they can still go outside to their yard, garden in a properly designed flower box, or cook in their own kitchen with confidence. They can live a fulfilling life with just some adaptations to their home for safety and confidence.”

On Wednesday, September 17, Mr. Gustin will give a presentation on ways homes can be adapted for ‘aging in place’ for life enrichment for seniors and persons with disabilities at the Sherman Senior Center at 10:30 a.m. in Sherman, and Thursday, September 25 at the AARP offices at 1:30 p.m. at 7 Hayestown Road (Sokol Duckpin Lanes) in Danbury.

A National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Certified Aging in Place Specialist for re-structuring homes for people with physical and cognitive disabilities, Home Crew CT adapts homes to provide safe and easy access for such daily living activities as bathing, dressing, preparing meals, eating and sleeping. “These are basic activities of independence,” stated Gustin. “Our role is to make people safe and comfortable doing these activities so that anyone at any age can live at home. We also want disabled or aging individuals to do what they enjoy doing while living a full life.”

Attuned fully to special building codes, home modification techniques and building materials, Home Crew CT installs wheelchair access ramps, creates barrier-free entrances, installs lifts and elevators, widens doorways and halls, reconfigures electrical outlets and switches for easy access, and installs ergonomic door handles. “The products, technology, and design options cover every aspect of home living - easy access closets and pantries, chair height toilets, wall cabinet lifts that literally bring the cabinets down to the person sitting in a wheelchair, multi-height counters, and much more,” explained Gustin.

With ‘life enrichment’ as their focus, Home Crew CT provides shelving and work surfaces that enable wheelchair accessibility to home hobby or office space, natural and artificial task lighting for hobby and reading areas, and exterior paths for enjoying the outside. “For assurance of safety in every room,” stated Gustin, “we install grab bars and railings, barrier-free showers, enhanced lighting as seniors need more light, non-slip or slip-resistant floors, temperature-limited water for bathing and dish washing, even contrasting colors on walls and showers to assist those with cognitive deficits.

Our focus is on full accessibility to every aspect of daily living, and with confidence. Studies show that the overwhelming majority of Americans want to live in their homes rather than nursing care or assisted living facilities. People who are aging very much want to spend the final years of their lives enjoying fully what they’ve known and loved to the best of their abilities. Our role is to help them feel safe and secure in their homes as long as they are able.”

Gustin pointed out that AARP studies reveal that, “84% of Americans want to stay in their homes. Studies and surveys also show that the number one ambition of most disabled or injured people is to be at home with their families. To live their lives fully and hopefully with the abilities to interact with generations of people in their families and with friends they know and love. By adapting a home for wheelchair accessibility or other physical needs, more visits can be enjoyed in a home and more inter-generational activities and memories can be created.”

In November, Mr. Gustin will offer two additional public seminars on ways homes can be adapted for ‘aging in place’ including ‘life enrichment’ for seniors and persons with disabilities on Wednesday, November 5 at the New Milford Library at 6:30 p.m., and Friday, November 14 at the Brookfield Senior Center, at 1:00 p.m.
