Community Day at WCSU Permaculture Garden is Friday, 9/23

DANBURY, CONN. – As part of the Permaculture Garden Project sponsored by the Jane Goodall Center for Excellence in Environmental Studies, Western Connecticut State University will host “Community Day” from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 23, at the garden, adjacent to the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury.

The event will involve harvesting, weeding and cleaning up the garden. Tools and snacks will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring gloves and appropriate clothing. “Community Day” is free and open to the public.

Permaculture gardens are designed to be sustainable, self-sufficient and to utilize the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems. The garden at WCSU engages students, faculty and the community in learning about where our food comes from and how it gets to our plates. In addition to promoting healthy and sustainable eating habits, the garden is also utilized in teaching students about soil testing for lab work.

“The garden draws people together for a common purpose,” said Professor of Anthropology Dr. Laurie Weinstein, chair of the Jane Goodall Center. “It gives people hope, especially in relationship to national politics, global warming and whatever else might be giving people angst. The garden represents the good people can do.”
