Housatonic River Designation Bill Passes House and Senate

A bill sponsored by local legislators concerning the designation of the Housatonic River as a wild and scenic river was passed in the state House of Representatives Monday, following state Senate approval, and goes next to the Governor for his signature.

Earlier this year members of the legislature's Environment Committee heard public testimony on Raised Bill 81, "An Act Concerning The Designation Of The Housatonic River As A Wild And Scenic River", proposed by Rep. Roberta Willis and Senator Clark Chapin.

"I am delighted that this bill has been approved by the House and look forward to the Governor signing the bill into law," Rep. Willis said. "This has been an issue under discussion and review for decades. This means more protection for the river and the designation could provide more control over the river for the people who live in the region. It will enable the local River Commission to more effectively manage and protect this outstanding natural resource."

She pointed out that the proposal for this Wild and Scenic designation covers the section of the upper Housatonic River In Connecticut from the Massachusetts border to New Milford, and is supported by all seven communities, North Canaan, Falls Village, Salisbury, Sharon, Cornwall, Kent and New Milford.

State Senator Clark Chapin said, "I'm so pleased that both the House and Senate recognized what those of us who live in the northwest corner already know - the Housatonic River deserves this special attention.  It is a valued treasure and hopefully passage of this legislation will help keep it that way for future generations."

Under provisions of the proposed bill, The Northwest Hills Council of Governments shall act as the administering agency for the Housatonic River on behalf of the Housatonic River Commission. The Northwest Hills Council of Governments shall constitute a political subdivision of the state for purposes of executing its duties and responsibilities.

Also, the Governor shall submit an application to the Secretary of the Interior for purposes of completion of the designation of the portion of the Housatonic River described in the bill.
