Mortar brought to New Milford store causes evacuations, Route 7 shut down

Police shut down Route 7 in New Milford and evacuated people in the immediate area after someone brought a WWII or Vietnam era mortar shell into a store Wednesday afternoon.

A mortar, which police said they believe to be inert, was brought to Litchfield County Pickers on Kent Road.

Employees at Litchfield County Pickers removed the item and put into field behind their business, police said.

Police were notified and the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad was called to investigate the discovery. Even though the mortar appears to be inert, state police will still test it.

The Veterans Plaza was shut down and people there were evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Route 7 near Bridge Street was closed from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. while police investigated the incident, but it has since reopened.
