Take a deep breath: Newtown Yoga Festival is Tomorrow

The fourth annual Newtown Yoga Festival will take place on Saturday, August 27th, 2016 at NYA Sports & Fitness. Register here.

This year’s festival will feature Elena Brower and Gwen Lawrence leading the community class in the afternoon. Brower combines poses and meditation to open the heart, while Lawrence focuses on injury prevention and power. Both are looking forward to the festival. Lawrence says, “I am honored to be a part of this extraordinary joining of community support, love and show the resiliency of the human spirit. Giving back and being a part of something bigger than yoga, bigger than bad news and bigger than new beginnings is uplifting, humbling, and inspiring!”

This year’s festival starts with a didgeridoo performance by Casey Dixon. The morning warm-up includes JourneyDance and Hoop Yoga followed by different types of Flow and Vinyasa yoga at the yoga buffet. After there will be lunch, music, and a silent auction in the courtyard then the community class convenes. The event closes with relaxation led by Internationally known & award winning new age recording artist, sound/vibrational healer and teacher Jennifer Zulli, who brings her Tibetan singing bowls.

The Newtown Yoga Festival started in 2013, when a group of longtime residents—yoga teachers and practitioners—got together to offer a different form of healing to their hurting community, which was still reeling from the Sandy Hook shootings of December 2012. The founding team of Michael Anderson, Suzy DeYoung, Renee Kennedy, Leda O'Callaghan, Karen Pierce, Jennifer Smith, and Jennifer Zulli wanted to bring residents together in a forum that was not politically motivated or focused on grief and trauma.

“We looked to engage people at their own pace by offering experiences such as yoga, meditation, and dance, which have long been known to lift the mind, body and spirit,” explains DeYoung. The other purpose was to raise funds to offer yoga to members of the Newtown community.
