Edgar W. Beers, 76, life member and past chief of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Dept.

Edgar W. Beers, age 76, of the Hawleyville section of Newtown died Monday July 28th in Danbury Hospital. He was born in Danbury on February 17, 1938 a son of the late Morris and Jennie (Noble) Beers.

Edgar was a graduate of Newtown High School and attended what is now Western Connecticut State University. He served in the US Army and was the longtime Dairy Manager at the A&P Store in Newtown. Edgar was a life member and Past Chief of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a former member of the Newtown Board of Fire Commissioners and served many years as the purchasing agent for the board. Active in Newtown civic affairs, Mr. Beers served on the Board of Managers of the Edmond Town Hall for many years, was elected to the Legislative Council and was an active member of the Newtown Democratic Town Committee. He was also a member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club and the United Food Workers of America.

Edgar is survived by a brother, Clifford Beers and his wife Maryellen of Newtown and two nieces, Kelley O'Day Dunn and her husband K. Lee of Redding and Erin O'Day of Ventura, CA.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown, Thursday July 31 from 5 to 8 p.m. All other services and interment in Central Cemetery, Brookfield will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hawleyville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co., P.O. Box 68, Hawleyville, CT 06440.
