Final Sunday Cinema Series is set for Dec. 28

Final Sunday Cinema Series December 28

On Sunday, December 28, the Edmond Town Hall Theater will screen two final films released in1939, the Greatest Year in Film. See At the Circus at 1:00 PM, featuring the willful mayhem of Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx, and at 4:00 & 7:00 PM, see Babes in Arms, starring the beloved child stars, Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.  Take note:  these films lack the rudeness, profanity, violence, and other trends of current movies.

In At the Circus, the Marx Brothers attempt to help an owner of a small-time circus, double-crossed by his partner who wants to take it over.  Some of the most memorable musical treats in this film include Groucho’s rendition of “Lydia the Tattooed Lady,” Chico’s “Beer Barrel Polka” on the piano, and Harpo’s “Blue Moon” on the harp.  With quips, jabs, and jokes galore, this movie is sure to please.

A product of its time, Babes in Arms pairs Rooney and Garland as teenage children of vaudeville veterans. With the advent of “talkies”, vaudeville falls out of favor, which turns these once popular stars of the stage into “has-beens.”  Mickey Moran (Rooney) leads a group of talented kids from his community to put on a show of their own to make ends meet.  The Oscar nominated musical score includes such hits as “Good Morning,” “You are my Lucky Star,” “Where or When,” and “I Cried for You.”  This film was both a commercial and critical hit, and even earned Mickey Rooney an Oscar nomination.

Tickets for all shows are $2.  All proceeds and donations will go to the Edmond Town Hall Theater improvements.

This film series has been presented by the Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, who will be donating all of the movies shown this year to the C.H. Booth Library for the community to enjoy.
