Big Y Supports American Red Cross Nepal Earthquake Disaster Relief

Launches Customer and Employee Donation Program in Stores

FARMINGTON, CONN. April 29,2015 - The American Red Cross is supporting the massive relief response to the Nepal Earthquake and Big Y World Class Market is doing its part to send help and hope to those in need.

From Thursday, April 30 to Sunday, May 17, Big Y customers and employees will have the opportunity to donate to American Red Cross Disaster Relief at all Big Y locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. Donation containers will be available at all Big Y registers. The funds raised will support people affected by the Nepal Earthquake.

”We are grateful to Big Y for stepping up once again to support relief efforts in the wake of disaster,” said American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region CEO Mario Bruno. “The Big Y family of customers and employees make a major difference in the lives of neighbors around the corner or across the globe.”

The American Red Cross has joined the Nepal Red Cross, other international Red Cross societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross to rush support to Nepal in the wake of the devastating earthquake and aftershocks. American Red Cross support includes financial contributions to support relief operations and the deployment of communications experts and satellite equipment to facilitate work in Nepal, where the infrastructure has been severely damaged.

“Working together, we can bring much needed help to the people of Nepal,” Bruno said.

Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need. Past initiatives include campaigns to support both international and domestic disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Big Y collected donations from customers and employees resulting in a donation of $108,277.32 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund – Haiti Relief and Development. After the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, Big Y presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $100,000. When a tornado outbreak in 2011 devastated communities right in their own back yard, Big Y, its customers and employees donated $141,000 to Red Cross disaster relief and stepped up once again in 2012 to provide $75,000 for Hurricane Sandy. Most recently, through similar efforts, Big Y Foods presented donations to the American Red Cross totaling $40,000 each for relief efforts to the Oklahoma Tornadoes and Typhoon Haiyan disasters that struck in 2013.
