NewArts presents "Liberty Smith" and Disney's "The Lion King Jr." at Newtown High School

New Arts presents two shows this summer at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook.

"Liberty Smith" will be staged beginning Friday, July 31. "Liberty Smith" is an original musical filled with comedy, romance and adventure, recounting the possibly true and fantastical tale of America's forgotten founding father. If you think that it was George Washington who chopped down the cherry tree, Ben Franklin who discovered electricity or Paul Revere who rode that famous midnight ride... you don't know the whole story! It's "Forrest Gump" meets "1776," where everyone can change the course of history.... whether they make it into textbooks or not. Liberty Smith was somehow responsible for all the major events in the American Revolution, yet his astonishing story has never been told... until now. Come experience the founding of America, with a musical twist like none you've ever seen!  Performances are Friday, July 31 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 1 at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m.

Disney's "The Lion King Jr." will be staged beginning Thursday, Aug. 6. Disney's The Lion King has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world and now NewArts: Summer Musicals will bring this one-of-a-king musical to Newtown by the of the just-released Junior version. The African savannah comes to life on our stage with Simba, Rafiki, Pumbaa, Timon and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this inspiring coming-of-age tale. Performances are Thursday and Friday, Aug. 6 and 7 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 8 at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 9 at noon and 5 p.m.
