On the Children's Shelf: Books That Make Us Love Reading

One of my children, while she likes to read, was searching for a series she really loves. She tried many of the popular ones and liked them, but she could put them down. The books didn’t call to her begging her to keep reading. I truly believe that there is a right book out there for everyone…it’s just finding that book. Once you do, you will love reading in a way you never did before.

A few weeks ago, my daughter’s dear little friend lent her a copy of Chris Colfer’s “The Wishing Spell,” book one in “The Land of Stories” series. She started reading this 700 page book that combines the modern world and fairy tales and was immediately hooked. She couldn’t put the book down. I found her reading well past her bedtime and had to tell her she had to go to sleep (while secretly doing the “my kid found a book she loves" happy dance on the inside).

She devoured that first book. She read and read and even when I thought she would want a break from reading, I found her curled up with that book. As she approached the final pages of book one, she was already looking forward to book two. She finished the book and  brought it to school to return to her friend.

Later that day, that same sweet girl was at our front door holding book two, offering to let my daughter borrow it. Now my heart happy dance was exploding. Not only did we finally have a series that made my child over the moon to read, but also a shared love of a great book. I love book recommendations, and I love seeing my children give and receive book recommendations. I love that books are a part of their friendships, and they can share this love of great stories.

I haven’t read “The Land of Stories” yet, but it is now on my “to be read” list. Any book that makes my child this happy to read is one I can’t wait to dive into.
