Newtown First Selectman Issues Severe Weather Alert

Severe Weather Alert - Storm Warning in effect from Monday afternoon (23rd) to Tuesday morning (24th)

* Hazard Types... High winds, rain heavy at times, tree and power line damage.

* Accumulations... Rain 1-3” across the state…..possible smaller amounts of ice/snow.

* Timing... Winds increase in strength Monday afternoon and evening, into morning.

* Impacts... High winds may cause tree damage and power outages. Heavy rain may cause local urban flooding. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to occur this afternoon and evening and into Tuesday morning. Strong Northeast winds sustained at 35 – 45 MPH gusting to 50 MPH are expected inland.

The strongest winds and heaviest rains are expected between 7:00 PM and 4:00AM. Some tree and power line damage is expected and power outages are possible. There is also the potential for mixed precipitation at higher elevations. If you must travel...keep an extra flashlight, food, water and supplies in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Newtown’s First Selectman and the Emergency Management Office urge residents to be prepared for severe weather and ask that every resident make appropriate preparations to ensure personal safety and readiness. Please review your preparedness.
