Temple Sholom to Host A Night of Magic and Surprise Fundraiser on September 17

On Saturday, September 17, at 8:00 p.m., Temple Sholom on Route 7 in New Milford, will host “A Night of Magic and Surprise” fundraiser to support their non-profit synagogue. The Magic of Marco will be the featured entertainment.

A small but trend-setting synagogue, membership at Temple Sholom during the last year increased a notable 12 percent. Temple Sholom’s Rabbi Ari Rosenberg, who is entering his second year as leader of the synagogue, commented, “This increase may make this the fastest growing congregation in Connecticut.”

During his tenure with Temple Sholom, Rabbi Rosenberg has introduced many innovative, thought-evoking, community-building programs. Most recently, he engaged in a well-attended public debate titled, “A Conversation About Jewish and Christian Perspectives on Same Sex Relationships”.

In August 2016, Temple Sholom welcomed ordained guest Cantor Laura Breznick who will visit the synagogue for a variety of services and programs throughout 2016 and 2017. Cantor Breznick has served synagogues in Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey, and is engaged to Rabbi Stefan Tiwy of the United Jewish Center in Danbury. Her services will be in addition to monthly musical accompaniments offered by Barbara Kessler, who also leads the High Holiday Choir.

A variety of ongoing programs offered at the synagogue provide valued intellectual, spiritual, and social connections. Torah study is offered every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Adult education classes are offered Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.

In November and December of 2016 the Temple will offer “Talmud for Beginners.” “Jewish Perspectives on Christian Scriptures” will be offered February through March in 2017. Plus a “History of Modern Israel” will be offered May through June 2017.

In addition to Friday and Saturday religious services, Temple Sholom hosts an ongoing “Jewish Journeys” program with a unique, inter-generational approach that has been recognized nationwide as an exemplary educational model. This unconventional, experiential, multi-generational free Sunday morning program attracts children of varying ages, their parents, and older adults. In a small group, they study subjects which include Hebrew reading fluency, the wide range of aspects of Judaism, and Jewish lifestyles and traditions.

For families with children age five and younger, Temple Sholom offers a very successful monthly “Pajama Havdallah” program. This free Saturday 5 p.m. program is run in conjunction with the www.pjlibrary.org and features a lively variety of interactive songs, stories and crafts with musical accompaniment.

Temple Sholom also currently offers Kabbalat Shabbat on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. accompanied by Sari Max, and Shabbat Morning Services on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.

Part of the notable success of Temple Sholom is their recent shift from a traditional dues structure to a “Conscientious Contribution” platform which allows members to choose how much they would like to offer to help support the synagogue. “This new system,” commented Rabbi Rosenberg, “has been so successful, it has actually generated more revenue than the former dues structure. It has also helped increase our membership.”

The synagogue’s “Night of Magic and Surprise” September 17 fundraiser event will be held at Temple Sholom located at 122 Kent Road (Route 7) in New Milford. Tickets purchased in advance are $30/person, and tickets at the door on September 17 will be $36/person. To order advance tickets, call 860-354-0273, or email to sholomsec@sbcglobal.net.
