Post University announces summer programs for high school students

Post University Announces Five Summer Academies for High School Students
Expanded “Summer Experience” now includes college credit options

WATERBURY, Connecticut – Tuesday, May 12, 2015 - Post University will offer five week-long academies for area high school students this summer, providing opportunities for intensive, hands-on instruction in the areas of Crime Scene Investigation, Robotics, Environmental Science, Social Media, and Theatre Arts.  All programs will be held on the University’s Waterbury campus, and three offer the opportunity for enrollment in corresponding Post courses for credit.

Post’s Crime Scene Investigation Academy (August 3 through 7 / $325) introduces students to the fields of Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation in a full-day program format.  CSI Academy allows students the opportunity to work with real police officers and other experts in the field, learning what it means to be a Crime Scene Investigator. Students may also take a three-credit course to accompany the Academy, for an extra fee.

Post’s Robotics Academy, a full-day program (July 20 through 27 / $325), will teach the hardware, software and engineering philosophy of robotics in a hands-on, small group, project-based environment.  Students with no previous experience are welcome as there is no prior knowledge required.  Students with experience in robotics are also welcomed and will be challenged to explore new ideas, and develop new skills.

Curtains Up! Theatre Academy participants will have the opportunity to explore the performing arts in a safe, nurturing full-day camp environment (July 27 through 31 / $325).  The program will support both students with previous theatrical experience and those new to the performance arts. A variety of disciplines will be explored, including but not limited to: dance, acting, costuming, and vocal performance. The camp members will be active participants in the creation of a performance showcase at the end of the week.

In the day and age of Facebook, Instagram, SnapShot, and Twitter, high school students must be media literate and understand the consequences of inappropriate uses of social media. The goal of the half-day Social Media Academy (July 20 through 24 / $175) is to teach high school students how to be responsible consumers and creators of social media. Students may choose to take a corresponding three-credit course for an extra fee.

Participants in the Environmental Explorers Academy (July 13 through 17 / $325) will perform hands-on field investigations designed to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the ecological systems all around us.  Exploration of the environment will include analysis of insect populations (entomology), the study and identification of CT vegetation (botany) and forests ecosystems, and an inquiry into the characteristics of lake ecosystems (limnology).  The full-day program may be enhanced by adding the three-credit course option.

Program fees include all materials, lab fees, and lunch daily (full day programs only).  Adding a three-credit Post course requires a high school GPA of 3.0+ and a letter of recommendation from the student’s high school.  College course fee is $550.
