"The Art of Collecting: The Mansion’s Hidden Treasures" Lecture

On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, 11 a.m., at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, 295 West Avenue in Norwalk, CT, Curator Raechel Guest will give a talk entitled, The Art of Collecting: The Mansion’s Hidden Treasures

Ms. Guest will take an in-depth look at some of the remarkable “hidden treasures” featured in the upcoming exhibit, Hidden Treasures: Artifacts from the LMMM Collections, including a magnificent silver inkwell made by Tiffany & Co. just after the Civil War, a gold and pearl scent bottle also made by Tiffany, whimsical hat pins with semi-precious stones, and a set of rare hand-painted French porcelain dishes made during the 1880s. This new exhibit will open to the public on Wed., October 22, 2014.

Ms. Guest has scoured the LMMM collections, searching for rarely-seen, delightful and unique objects owned by the Lockwood and Mathews family members who lived in the Mansion from 1868 until 1938. Her lecture will reveal both the family stories connected to the objects and the broader significance of the objects as decorative arts and material culture.

Raechel Guest is a Smith College graduate with a Master’s Degree in Collection Management from the University of Delaware: Winterthur Museum Program in Early American Culture. A historian, lecturer, and former associate curator at the Mattatuck Museum, she is currently the LMMM Curator and the Executive Director and Curator of the Cornwall Historical Society.

This will be the fifth in a series of lectures entitled, Lockwood-Mathews Mansion: Seventy-Four Years of Culture - Art, Life, and Love, 1864-1938, by curators and experts in the field of Victorian era material life. The lectures are $25 for members, $30 for non-members per session. Please RSVP by Friday, October 10, 2014. Please note that lunch will not be available if reservations are not made by the above date.
