Artful Springtime Offerings at Silvermine Arts Center

During May and June, Silvermine invites the public to attend two spring film screenings in Sara Victoria Hall—or to join an Art Walk in Central Park. Art Historian Anne Bolin will lead a small group to explore the art and architecture of the Park on Wednesday, May 6 (details below).

Two film screenings—one on the concept of identity, the other on consumption—from the “Art in the Twenty-First Century” film series—will be shown in Sara Victoria Hall on Sunday, May 17 and Monday, June 22 respectively. The films provide fresh takes on the concepts of identity and consumption, and offer in-depth conversations with a number of artists along with glimpses of them at work in their studios or in the various stages of large-scale community projects.

Art in the Park: Treasures of Central Park

Art Historian Anne Bolin will be the guide for a walking tour of the Park during one of the most beautiful times of the year. Her group will explore the rich history of America’s first landscaped park through the architecture, sculpture, and fountains placed throughout the grounds over the past 150 years.

Anne Bolin is a specialist in 19th-century art and culture. Former educator for the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, North Carolina, and curator of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk, she currently teaches art history at Sacred Heart University. She received her B.A. in History from the University of North Carolina, her M.A. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. in Art History from Emory University.

Ms. Bolin has also published papers on 19th-century art and architecture. The tour will cover the lower half of the Park, beginning at 59th Street and concluding right behind The Metropolitan Museum at 82nd Street.

The walk will take place Wednesday, May 6, 10 – 1 pm. Tickets are $50 for members, $55 for non-members. Space is limited and registration is required.

“Art in the Twenty-First Century” Film Screenings:

Art: 21 Film Screening, “Identity”

How does contemporary art address the concept of identity? How do artists working today reveal and question commonly held assumptions about stereotypes, self-awareness, portraiture, and what it means to be an artist? The “Art in the Twenty-first Century” documentary “Identity” explores these questions through the work of the artists William Wegman, Bruce Nauman, Kerry James Marshall, Maya Lin, and Louise Bourgeois. The introductory segment features Steve Martin and William Wegman. Sunday, May 17, 2 p.m.

Art: 21 Film Screening, “Consumption”

How does contemporary art address the multi-layered idea of consumption? How do artists question commonly held assumptions about commerce, mass media, and consumer society? The “Art in the Twenty-First Century” documentary “Consumption” explores these questions through the work of the artists Barbara Kruger, Michael Ray Charles, Matthew Barney, Andrea Zittel, and Mel Chin. Monday, June 22, 3pm.

Both films will be shown in Sara Victoria Hall. Tickets are $10 members, $12 non-members. A moderated discussion—with refreshments—will follow each film. Silvermine offers these films as a springboard to discussion about art in practice and the ever-evolving history of art in the U.S.
