Ms. Onyemelukwe, who recently penned her memoir, Nigeria Revisited: My Life and Loves Abroad (Peace Corps Writers/2014), will share her story of living in Africa as an American for twenty-four years. A once naive Peace Corps volunteer, Onyemelukwe married a Nigerian and morphed into an experienced educator, parent and entrepreneur during her time there.
“Nigeria is my adopted country -- I feel a great affinity for both the people and culture. Even today, it’s an integral part of my life. An ‘honorary’ Nigerian, I welcome the opportunity to share my stories,” said Onyemelukwe.
Now living in Westport with her husband of 50 years, Onyemelukwe is still active with Peace Corps alumni groups and visits Nigeria on a regular basis, as two of her children reside there. She is also fluent in Igbo, her husband’s native tongue, and one of the three major languages in Nigeria.
In adddition to Nigeria Revisited, Onyemelukwe has been published in The New York Times, Brain, Child Magazine, Love on the Road 2013: Twelve Tales of Love and Travel (Malinki Press/2013) and the Friends of Nigeria newsletter. She also writes a blog via her website, www.catherineonyemelukwe.com, and is available for speaking engagements and book group or library visits. Her memoir may be purchased in print or digital format on Amazon.
