Columbus Letter Comes Home

Saturday, December 05, 2015, 5:00pm - 7:00pm

As part of the "Pages from Pequot" Special Collections exhibition, Exploring America: Christopher Columbus, Pequot Library's own Columbus letter* (circa 1493) comes home for a visit after being loaned to Yale University for over 60 years.

George Miles, William Robertson Coe Curator, Yale Collection of Western Americana, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Yale University, will show the letter and speak about its importance.

Translated into Latin by Leandro di Cosco
(Aliander de Cosco")

The full exhibition from the series, "Pages from Pequot," Exploring America: Christopher Columbus runs from now until January 15, 2016, and features over 20 of Pequot Library’s rare books about Christopher Columbus and his expeditions.

Today, the conversation about Christopher Columbus is not without controversy on many levels. Pequot's exhibition shows primary source materials from his own time, 1493 - early 1900s, inviting the public to form their own perspectives. Trying to create conversation in an intellectual yet contemporary mindset, Pequot Library will also present materials by artists from today -- both musical and visual.

The exhibition is in the Reading Room and The Perkin Gallery.
