"LET THE RIVER RUN" - A Big Beautiful KEYS Benefit

“LET THE RIVER RUN” – Sheridan and Silvan Bringing a Big Beautiful KEYS Benefit to Voices Cafe

When Carly Simon recorded “Let The River Run,” for the 1988 film “Working Girl“ she totally understood the musical power that would be created by having The St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys backing her on her self-proclaimed “hymn to New York City.” When pianist and choir director Rob Silvan contacted Westport-based singer-songwriter Suzanne Sheridan about doing a benefit concert for the Bridgeport-based KEYS Program, a door was opened to a dream that Sheridan had long held – to perform Simon’s masterpiece with a large choir at a Voices Café event at The Unitarian Church in Westport. “Let the River Run” won the Oscar for best song of 1988. “LET THE RIVER RUN” promises to be one of the outstanding concerts of 2015. When magic happens, invite everyone to take part.

“LET THE RIVER RUN,” the big beautiful benefit concert, based on a dream come true, will happen on Saturday December 5 at Voices Café, the ongoing music series at The Unitarian Church in Westport. Sheridan revealed, “Several months ago I had reached out to Rob to ask if he would like my help raising money for KEYS. So when he called I immediately said, “YES!” Then we had to figure out the details of who, what, when, where, and how.” We asked the folks at Voices Café if they wanted to present “LET THE RIVER RUN” and without hesitation, they jumped into the river with us. So this is all very exciting with my band and Rob and his choir. It means a lot of people in the mix but that also means the music will be very powerful.”

The Suzanne Sheridan Band includes Bob Cooper on keyboards, Marshal Rosenberg on percussion, and Joe Meo on sax and clarinet. Joined by Rob Silvan and The Talmadge Hill Choir they will all be performing, among others, the music of Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen.

Now in its 5th season, Voices Café has presented a wide range of musical artists including Peter Yarrow, Cheryl Wheeler, Aztec Two Step, Brother Sun, and Vance Gilbert. The Suzanne Sheridan Band is making its 3rd appearance at Voices Café. Sheridan first appeared at Voices with her band in 2012 when she made a live recording of the Joni Mitchell/Leonard Cohen music, now available on CD, The Music of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Sheridan again played to a sold-out house at Voices Café early in 2015 when The Suzanne Sheridan Band performed the music of Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell. “LET THE RIVER RUN” will mark the first collaboration between Sheridan and Rob Silvan and The Talmadge Hill Choir. Silvan founded the KEYS (Kids Empowered by Your Support) Program in 2004 and continues to serve as its director. The K.E.Y.S. Program provides individual and group musical instrument lessons to Bridgeport schoolchildren. These are kids that could not get this powerful and important part of their education any other way.

Sheridan’s journey with Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen started in Westport and she has taken this music to Australia, Canada, many venues in the Northeast, but always back home to Westport. With the addition of Carly Simon’s music to this adventure, Sheridan is able to fold in the added benefit of Silvan’s tremendous artistry and the power of a 18-member choir.

Seating at Voices Café is cabaret-style, which allows the audience to bring their own beverages and snacks, although sweets and coffee will be available for sale during intermission.

Voices Café takes place on Saturday Dec 5 at 8 pm at The Unitarian Church in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Road in Westport. For tickets, visit Voices Cafe or call 203-227-7205 x 14.
