Connecticut Food Bank to Host Open House in Wallingford

Public Invited to Tour State-of-the-Art Distribution Center February 4

The Connecticut Food Bank is inviting the public to tour its new, state-of-the-art headquarters and distribution center at an open house event on Thursday, February 4, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Connecticut Food Bank is located at 2 Research Parkway in Wallingford. The event is free of charge.

“This building provides us the opportunity to increase our service delivery and capacity to help feed hungry people in Connecticut,” said Paul O’Leary, Connecticut Food Bank Interim CEO.

O’Leary said the facility is a significant step for the Connecticut Food Bank. “We have doubled our warehouse space. Our fresh and frozen food storage is triple what we were able to accept in our two former locations combined. The added storage helps us increase both the variety and consistency of the food we supply to community-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other hunger relief programs in the six counties we serve.”

The state’s non-profit leader in the fight against hunger and the largest provider of charitable food donations, the Connecticut Food Bank provides food to more than 300,000 hungry Connecticut residents in six counties through a network of community-based food hunger relief organizations, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and adult and child day programs, as well as through its Mobile Pantry, GROW! Truck and Kids’ BackPack services. Last year, the Connecticut Food Bank provided enough food to prepare more than 18 million meals.

More than 30% of the food distributed by the Connecticut Food Bank is fresh produce, O’Leary said, noting that the Food Bank seeks to provide foods with a high nutritional value to support better health for people in need of food, as well as supporting the developmental needs of children who benefit from the food provided. “This is a major factor in why we sought to increase our cold and frozen food storage,” O’Leary said.

O’Leary encouraged the public to attend, saying he hoped they would get a better sense of the “impact we have on the community with the help of donors and volunteers.”

“We invite the public to join us on Thursday to see our new distribution center, to learn more about how we are fighting hunger and to meet members of our staff and volunteer corps who power the work of the Food Bank,” O’Leary said.

The Connecticut Food Bank open house is set for Thursday, February 4, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at its new headquarters and distribution center, located at 2 Research Parkway in Wallingford, off exit 15 on Interstate 91.
