iFloat Spa Makes A Splash in Downtown Westport

As we approach the new year, it's been a few months since we've been able to enjoy a swim in the ocean or at our beaches on the Sound.

As a former swimmer, lifeguard, and Pisces, my thirst for healing salt water swim reaches peak highs throughout the winter.

Luckily, I don't have to travel south to experience a refreshing dip in the sea - iFloat Spa, a revolutionary flotation spa has opened in Westport.

According it iFloat's website, flotation is "The practice of floating in warm salt water in a quiet, dark place to enhance well-being by slowing the mind down, and providing the body an opportunity to relax in a peaceful environment".

Wanting to experience it myself, I booked the next available appointment the next day with the owner, David.

David was both calm and cheerful upon our meeting, and asked me to remove my shoes at the front the desk.

After giving me information on the flotation process, and several simple instructions, I was ready to begin floating.

Admittedly, I was nervous to be in a completely dark room for an hour, and was downright scared about not being able to find the door, but David reassured me I would - and asked if I would like soothing music for the first few minutes. I accepted.

Similar to meditation, I found it hard to turn my mind "off", but after my initial giggling at my Darth Vader-sounding breathing, I imagined myself drifting slowly in space.

Before I knew it, my hour was up (as indicated by the music coming back on). As David predicted, I had no trouble finding the door handle, and was only upset about having to leave the perfectly temperate water.

After the float, David likes to chat to with clients over a cup of herbal tea about the experience, any thoughts that may have come up during the session, and if you'd like to make another appointment.

I can't say that one session was life changing, but a calm feeling remained with me for quite a few hours post soak, and weekly floats are recommended to truly experience the benefits.

If the stress of the holidays is building up, and especially if you have any muscle or joint pain, I suggest calling David and trying out a session for yourself.
