Darien YMCA Gymnasts Rock at Regionals

2016 YMCA Regionals Recap

The Darien YMCA gymnasts took on more than 1,000 competitors at the 2016 YMCA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championship in Manchester, NH with great success. The Level 3s and 5s won Team Championships and nine gymnasts won individual All Around(AA) titles for their age group and level.

The Level 3 gymnasts bested 32 teams to win the team championship. Abby O’Brien led the team with a stunning team-high 38.30 AA to top the 10A age group, as well as placing first on bars and second on vault, beam and floor. In the 10B group, Tanner Generoso took second on bars and AA, third on vault and floor and fourth on beam. Bowen Burns earned sixth on vault and fifth on floor in the 10C group.

Anna Altier won the 9A group with 37.275 AA; took the floor title with 9.75 and was second on bars and beam. Sydney Berk placed third on bars and vault, eighth on floor and fourth AA while Sophia Geffner was third on floor, seventh on bars and tenth on beam. Ava Licata earned third on vault, fifth on bars, sixth on floor, eighth on beam and fourth AA in the 9B group while Annelise Enters was tenth on bars and ninth on floor.

Brianna Barrientos was the champ on beam and AA with 36.775 in the 11B group and placed third on vault, second on bars and sixth on floor. Carly Cambareri took seventh on vault while Theodora Tertiropoulos was tenth on floor. In the 11A group, Kira McCreesh took fourth on vault.

In the 8A group, Sophie Root was the beam champ with 9.7 and placed fourth on vault, seventh on bars, and second AA. Elsa Del Bene captured the floor title with 9.35 as well as sixth on vault, fifth on beam and fourth AA. Alexandra Kuras vaulted to the bronze medal. Ellie Davies flipped to first on floor with 9.65 in the 8B group and was second on bars, fifth on beam and third AA. Katie Primmer took fourth on bars and seventh on vault.

In the 12s group, Stephanie Carillo swung to second on bars and placed sixth on floor. Meredith Marra was steady for fourth on beam in the 13 and up group.

Also contributing to the Level 3 team’s success were Anastasia Buchesky, Julia Holmes, Alannah Morris, Isabella Woodring, Ciara Bresnahan, Alexandra Decsi and Amelia Kuhn.

The Darien Level 4s took fourth in the team competition. In the 9s group, Lauren Smith was the floor champ with 9.5 as well as second on vault. Julia Decsi took second on beam, fourth on floor and fifth on vault. Ali Kolman earned sixth on floor and eighth on beam. Alexia Buchesky’s meet high score was on floor. Iris West vaulted to seventh in the 10A group while Anna Primmer took third on floor, fifth on bars and beam and fourth AA in the 10B group.

Olivia Perkins placed second on beam, fourth AA, ninth on vault and eighth on floor and bars in the 11A group while Sofia Imbrogno vaulted to the silver medal. In the 11B group, Sofia Iuteri took tenth on vault, fifth on bars, second on beam and floor and third AA. Grace Nash earned her meet high score on beam. Melanie Vernal was eighth on vault, bars and beam in the 12A group. Tetyana Banaryk swung to fifth on bars in the 13s.

Sophia DeStefano led the Level 5 team champs, winning the titles on vault, beam with an impressive 9.575 and AA with 37.45 as well as bronze on floor in the 10 and under age group. Nadia Borja was champ on bars and floor with 9.7 and 9.5 and second on vault and AA. Abigail Nevin took seventh on vault, fourth on beam and fifth on bars and AA. Anna Moss placed sixth on beam and fourth on floor while Melina Cardini was fifth on vault and beam.

In the 11s group, Isabella DeStefano placed third on vault, beam and floor and fifth AA. Saskia Chermayeff won the beam title with 9.6, took fourth on vault, sixth AA and tied Gabriela Pye for fifth on floor. Gabriela was also fifth on bars and beam. Caterina Pye sprung to fifth on vault and fourth on floor. Emma Kelly placed second on beam while Megan Mitchell was seventh on floor. Audrey Ridder earned her meet high score on vault while Nima Rahbar’s high score was on floor.

Emma Neaderland nearly swept the titles in the 12B group, capturing first on beam with 9.6, as well as vault, floor and AA. Lucy Collins took sixth on bars, third on beam, second on floor and fourth on vault and AA in 12A.

Tori Ware led the second place Level 6 team, taking gold on vault, bars, beam with 9.575 and AA (37.15) as well as third on floor in the 11 years group. Kate Wolters earned fifth on beam and Sommer Schmidt was sixth on floor. Kerry McDermott was the AA and bars champ in the 14s group and also took fifth on vault. In the 15 and up group, Sofia Fea placed third on bars and beam and second on all other events and AA.

In the 12s, Lindsay Hall took fourth on vault, third on floor and sixth on beam. Holly McGoldrick earned fifth on floor, sixth on bars and seventh on beam. Dillan Aysseh swung to third on bars and was seventh on floor and fifth on vault. Christina Pizzani and Lizzie Canelli both earned their meet high scores on floor.

With just four gymnasts, the Level 7 team was still able to take fifth in the team competition. Kellie Arevalo led the team, winning the vault title with 9.575 in the 15 and up group and placing sixth on floor, third on bars and second on beam and AA. In the 13s, Lana Schmidt was the beam champ as well as third on vault and floor and second AA while Tess Keating took third on beam. Dorothy Browning earned sixth on beam and fourth on floor in the 14s group.

The Level 8 team was paced by Nikki Carlo who won gold on beam with 9.225 and placed third on vault, fourth on bars and second AA in the 14 and under group. Gianna Cardini took fourth on vault, sixth on bars and second on beam. In the 17-18 group, Fiona Brock was the beam champ with 9.075 while twin sister Aisling took sixth on beam and fourth on floor.

Kelsey Fedorko was the AA champ for the Level 9 age 16 and under group, also winning the floor and beam titles with 9.15 and 9.3 and placing second on vault. In the 17 and up group, Jessica Freiheit soared to the vault title with 9.125, placed second on bars and third AA. As the sole Level 10 competitor in the meet, Adnerys DeJesus swept the titles, scoring an impressive 9.6 on vault and 37.20 AA.

The team will compete next at the YMCA National Championships in Long Beach, CA. Darien is the defending national champion.
