How to Be Healthy in Chicago

Let's be honest. Chicago is more known for deep dish pizza than a deep fitness regime, but it is possible to stay healthy in Chitown and here’s how.

First, where you stay is vitality important to keeping with your fitness routine and well-being. The Swissotel Chicago is located in downtown Chicago, with stunning views of both the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

The Swissotel’s approach to a healthy lifestyle is inspired by their home country of Switzerland, where hiking the Alps, eating organic foods, and staying in shape are a natural part of daily life.

The Vitality program was developed from these principles and focuses not only on food and fitness, but quality of life and mindfulness as well. The goal of the program is to have guests feel as good on the road as they do at home.

From smart menu choices from room service such as fresh fruit and organically grown coffee, to providing complimentary workout equipment and exercise cards directly to your room, booking a room at the Swissotel also means staying fit.

And, when you’re ready to enjoy all the Windy City has to offer, consider these healthy options:

Kayak the Chicago River. Since the hotel was mere steps away from the river, I took full advantage of the location and warm weather and went on a guided kayaking tour with Urban Kayaks. It was a great way to get acquainted with the city, get in a workout, and provided the most fun people watching experience I’ve had, as crowds brushed past me on the sidewalk.

Bike (safely). Get acquainted with Chicago’s shared bicycle system is Divvy. You can rent one of the bright-blue bikes from several stations throughout the city, but the best area for cycling is an 18-mile path, free of cars, along Lake Michigan.  The path goes through Grant Park, North Avenue Beach, and the posh Lincoln Park.

Walk. Chicago is a very pedestrian-friendly city, and the best way to see it on foot. Map out a general plan of where you’d like to go, but also allow for spontaneity and deviation – this is usually where the fun comes in.

Enjoy a picnic in the park. Head to Millenium Park and enjoy a healthy picnic while you listen to one of the many spring and summertime performances offered almost daily. When you’re through, don’t forget to walk the park and see the famous bean.

Ride the Centennial Wheel. Conquer your fear of heights and ride the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier. Open year round, the newly built Ferris wheel soars to nearly 200 feet and offers 360-degree views of the Chicago skyline. Upgrade to VIP tickets for a one-of-a-kind glass bottom gondola experience.
