New Canaan Country School Students Earn National Recognition on World Language Exams

New Canaan Country School students in the Upper School division (grades 7-9) made a strong showing in the recent 2017 national World Languages exams. Of particular note, eighth grader Dania Zein of Darien received a perfect score on her French exam. Additional accolades went to seventh grader Amitav Nott of New Canaan, who earned the highest possible prize on his Latin exam, as well as eighth graders Henry Katis of Pound Ridge, NY and Emma LeBaron of New Canaan, who each earned a Silver Maxima Cum Laude certificate in Latin.

In Spanish, of the 36,500 students who sat for the exam nation-wide, 8 Gold medals - the highest possible prize – were awarded to Country School students, placing eighth grader Christopher Calderwood of Darien and ninth grader Brynn McClymont of Darien in the top 4 percent; eighth graders, Talbot von Stade of Rowayton, Shane Carbin of Norwalk and Georgia Rivero of New Canaan in the top 3 percent; ninth grader Dylan Koo of New Canaan in the top 2 percent; and ninth graders Maeve DeGulis of Darien and Megan Meyerson of New Canaan in the top 1 percent of the United States. In French, additional honors went to Seth Yoo of Pound Ridge and Katie Stevens of Darien who earned gold medals on their national exams.

World Language Teacher Liz Pepe was particularly pleased with the results, “Country School students did very well across the board. On behalf of the entire World Language department, I congratulate them all. These results are an affirmation of their hard work and continuous improvement all year long.”

Mandarin Chinese, while also offered as a language in Upper School, did not hold national exams.
