Norwalk Health Department Offers Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine to Residents

National Health Experts Recommends People 65 and Older Receive this New Kind of Pneumococcal Vaccine

The Norwalk Health Department now offers pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) as part of its Travel and Adult Immunization program. PCV-13 protects against pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia. In August 2014, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended PCV-13 for adults age 65 and older. The one-time dose of PCV-13 is recommended in addition to the long-used pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23). In other words, experts recommend that people older than 65 get both vaccines at least 6 months apart, and if you have been vaccinated with PPSV-23 already, experts now recommend that you also receive PCV-13.

“Most pneumococcal deaths in the United States are in adults, yet about 70 million of those at highest risk remain unvaccinated,” explained Darleen Hoffler, Supervisor of Clinical Services at the Health Department. “The safest and most effective way to protect yourself is by getting vaccinated.”

Since flu season is in full swing, the Health Department urges individuals to get the flu vaccine, as well, if they haven’t already. The pneumococcal and influenza vaccines are both covered by Medicare Part B.
