More than 25 newly training emergency response volunteers will gather on Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m. at the Norwalk Health Department (NHD) to celebrate the completion of their training for NHD’s Emergency Response Team (ERT). Mayor Harry Rilling will be on hand to welcome this first group of program trainees.
These volunteers—community members with both medical and non-medical backgrounds—donate their time and expertise to prepare for and respond to emergencies. They will also help to promote healthy living throughout the year.
“This class is the foundation of the Norwalk Health Department’s Emergency Response Team,” said Tim Callahan, Director of Health for the City of Norwalk. “They possess a wide range of skills, from a retired registered nurse to a purchasing agent, and represent 13 different languages. We are pleased to have this group of people trained and available to help support the professional Health Department staff.”
The group will continue to meet monthly, building on their initial training and testing their skills through tabletop exercises and drills. ERT members will support the ongoing programs and services provided by the Health Department.
The next ERT training program will be held in Spring 2017, and spaces are available for the next class of volunteers. People who enjoy giving back to their community, are at least 18 years old, and are interested in joining the ERT should contact Donna Schlegel, Volunteer Coordinator, at dschlegel@norwalkct.org.
