CITY REMINDS RESIDENTS TO PREPARE AS STRONG NOR’EASTER MOVES TOWARD THE AREA.
A dangerous winter storm will impact our area Tuesday with blizzard warnings, potential power outages and minor to moderate coastal flooding expected.
Confidence is increasing for severe weather starting in the early morning hours and blizzard conditions are expected after 9:00 am. Conditions should improve later in the day with the storm moving out in the evening.
The City has declared a snow emergency starting at 4:00 pm Monday.
The Fire Department is asking residents to ‘adopt a hydrant’. If possible, please clear hydrants closest to your property to help firefighters get quick access during fires. Residents and businesses are reminded to shovel sidewalks as required by City code. Garbage and recycling pick up will be pushed back a day. Norwalk Public Schools and City buildings will be closed tomorrow.
The City’s Emergency Management team met this morning to discuss the potential impact in Norwalk and the preparations being made by Departments and partners. In the event of a significant outage, Brien McMahon HS will be used an emergency shelter or drop in center. In addition to the City’s website and social media sites, the Code Red system may be used to update residents.
In order to allow the Public Works Department to efficiently plow the streets, please move your vehicles off the streets that are marked as snow emergency route. Vehicles that remain parked on streets marked as snow emergency routes may be ticketed and towed. You may park for Free at the Maritime and Yankee Doodle garages ONLY while the snow emergency/ CodeRed is in effect. There is no parking in the open parking lots between 2 AM and 6 AM to allow for snowplowing services. For your own safety, limit travel during this storm and make sure vehicles are free of snow and ice before driving. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this winter storm.

We will be updating the City’s website, norwalkct.org throughout the storm and have posted information about the snow emergency and preparedness tips as well.
In accordance with City Code Chapter 99, the snow emergency is in effect at 4:00 pm, Monday March 13, 2017:
1. No vehicle shall park or otherwise remain standing upon any snow emergency route when there is present an accumulation of two or more inches of snow or ice for a period of one hour or more between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. of any day.
2. A declared snow emergency shall remain in effect until terminated by announcement of the Mayor.
3. No person shall park a vehicle or otherwise allow a vehicle to stand upon any portion of a snow emergency route. No person shall park a vehicle or otherwise allow a vehicle to stand upon any street in such a manner as to constitute a hazard or obstruction to vehicular or pedestrian traffic or to hamper and interfere with the work of removing or plowing snow or removal of ice. 4. Vehicles in violation of these restrictions may be ticketed and/or towed at owner expense.
Stay informed! Listen to a NOAA weather radio or check local forecasts and news reports regularly.
If you experience a power outage, report it to your electric provider. Don’t assume they know about your outage or that someone else has called.
- Keep cell phones and other mobile devices charged. Remember, text messages can often go even if cell phone calls can’t.
- Keep your emergency supplies kit, including water, and copies of important documents, in a waterproof, portable container, in an easily accessible location.
- If your basement may flood, move items off the floor and check sump pumps to ensure they’re functioning properly.
- Be a good neighbor. Check on friends or family who may need help with shoveling. If you’re able, ‘Adopt a Hydrant’- clear a 3 foot area all around the fire hydrant and a path to the street to help Norwalk firefighters.
- Use common sense! Please don’t risk your life chasing a thrill. Extreme activities (kayaking, etc) not only risk your life, but the lives of the first responders who are called to assist.
