Explore a Vernal Pool

The Discovery Center at Ridgefield is hosting a Vernal Pool program for all ages on Saturday, April 7th at 2:00 P.M. in the Sarah Bishop Open Space of Ridgefield.

Vernal pools provide habitat for tadpoles, salamanders and many other fascinating creatures.  These pools, often created from snow melt & springtime rains, provide the water necessary to support the eggs and infant population of woodland frogs and salamanders. Only existing for 3 - 6 months, it is a race against time for these animals to develop into their adult form. Participants will be guided on a journey to learn about what is happening in some of the local vernal pools, who lives in them, and how this mini-ecosystem operates.

Nets will be provided to capture and present a few specimens for close examination, which will be released unharmed.

Directions from Ridgebury Road: turn on Chestnut Hill Road, go to the bottom of the hill and turn right on Twopence. Follow it to the stop sign. Turn left on Sarah Bishop. Sarah Bishop Open Space is after the 3rd house on the left. Parking is along the road but away from the curve, please.

All ages are welcome.  Waterproof boots are highly recommended.  Members are free, and non-members are $7 per person. Please call 203.438.1063 or visit the DC website www.ridgefielddiscovery.org to make reservations.
