Byrd's Books Hosts Discussion of "The Giver" in Advance of Film Release

The film adaptation of Lois Lowry's Newbery winning novel "The Giver" hits theaters on Aug. 15. In advance of the release, independent bookshop Byrd's Books will host two discussions of the novel on Aug. 7. The first, for students, begins at 4 p.m. and the second, for adults, at 7 p.m. Registration is required; click here to register.

The novel's protagonist is 12-year old Jonas, a boy coming of age in a dystopian society who discovers he has been assigned the most difficult profession of all--the keeper of memories. The movie version ages Jonas to 16, a decision not supported by Lowry.

Through a drawing, Byrd's will give away a signed, hardcover edition of the novel at the 4 p.m. discussion, and refreshments will be served. Every registered student attendee will also receive a free book from a select list of titles. The bookstore reserves the right to cap attendance at the event, if necessary.

The adult discussion will focus on the novel's themes and is appropriate for high school students and up.

For those who register to attend, Byrd's is offering a 15 percent discount on the novel with the promotional code "GIVER."

Byrd's is located at 126 Greenwood Ave. in Bethel. For more information, phone (203) 730-2973, or visit byrdsbooks.com.
