Earth Day and Rid Litter Day In celebration of Redding’s 250th Anniversary Tomorrow!

Earth Day and Rid Litter Day In celebration of Redding’s 250th Anniversary on April 22 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Celebrate Earth Day and Redding’s Rid Litter Day on the Town Green, Saturday, April 22, 2017, 9am-3 pm to construct the biggest “Mount Trashmore” yet.

Tables will be set up for the public to pick up gloves, vests and litterbags provided by the Town of Redding’s Public Works and Winters Brothers Waste and Trash Service until 1 pm.

You can choose your road assignment or one will be given to you. Town roads and facilities will be chosen for clean-up, as state roads are considered unsafe for pedestrians. So please wear your vest at all times. Remember, no home trash will be allowed on our mountain site! Trash drop off for Mount Trashmore ends at 2:45pm. At 3 pm, the mountain will be photographed, along with trash-pickers and volunteers. At that point, the refuse will be loaded into dumpsters and taken to Redding’s Transfer station for proper disposal. Be sure to stop and pick up a frozen treat when you drop off your trash. It is our way of saying “thank you” for your hard work.

Organics Composting Program While on the green, take time to check out our Organics Composting Drop-Off Recycling Program. We will have a sign-up sheet and kits available. Residents who sign up will receive a FREE collection kit with a 1 gallon kitchen collection bin, 6 months of compostable bags and a 6 gallon carry container. Separating organic materials from the trash should be thought of as a resource, not a waste. More food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in our everyday trash.

Compost added to gardens, construction sites, and poor soils makes great things happen! Relative Cost of Composting The cost to dispose of organics at the Redding Transfer and is .10 cents a pound. That’s 50% less than the cost to dispose of regular household garbage which is .20 cents a pound. And, by removing wet, heavy organic waste from your household trash, you’ll spend less on that too. To sign up for the program, you must have a permit for the Town’s Transfer & Recycling station.

Permits can be purchased at the Transfer & Recycling station or Town Hall during regular business hours. Permits run from July 1 to June 30th. A regular permit is $25; n additional vehicle is $10. For seniors, it’s $10 (60+ years of age); with an additional vehicle it’s $5.00. Paper Shredding Day Saturday, April 22 is also Paper Shredding Day at the Redding Recycling Center, 84 Hopewell Woods Road (GPS 92 Beck Road to locate). The time: 9am to noon. Samples you can bring for shredding are: Old papers, receipts, bank statements, tax returns, checks, paper medical records, etc. However, we will not accept x-rays or film or plastic.

The shredder will cross shred documents while you watch. Staples and paper clips are okay while binder clips and file hangers are not. The service is provided by American Document Destruction LLC Mobile. This is free to all residents of Redding. You must provide proof of residency required, i.e. license. The limit is 5 FILE BOXES PER EVENT or the equivalent of a copy paper box. Be prepared to wait up to 10 minutes in line.
