Highstead Arboretum Hosts Annual Fall Art Exhibit Opening September 7

Highstead, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Redding, will host its annual Fall Art Exhibit opening Sunday, Sept. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. Titled "Echoes: An Homage to Plants and Animals in Art," the exhibit features selected works from members of the Greater New York Chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. The works of art will be on display for public view from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 7 through Oct. 31 and are also available for purchase. Highstead is closed weekends and holidays.

"People have looked at the world around them since time immemorial and they have recorded it in many ways," said Dick Rauh, exhibit coordinator. "This appreciation of nature has taken many forms and this show is an attempt to pay homage to these past nature lovers by contemporary artists."

The opening and exhibit are open to the public. RSVP as space is limited to (203) 938-8809 or rsvp@highstead.net.

Highstead is a nonprofit organization that works to conserve the forested landscape of New England through science, sound stewardship, and collaboration with regional partners. Since its formation in 1982 Highstead has developed as a sanctuary for the study and appreciation of woodland plants and habitats. In 2005, Highstead made a decision to build on its success by initiating a new effort to engage in conservation of woodlands and natural landscapes at local, regional, and national scales through a leadership role in the Wildlands and Woodlands Initiative.

The Wildlands and Woodlands vision calls for a 50-year conservation effort to retain at least 70 percent of New England in forestland, permanently free from development. Of that forestland, 90 percent would be "woodlands," conserved by landowners and sustainably managed for multiple uses, including recreation and wood products, and ten percent would be "wildland" reserves shaped by the natural environment.
