EASTON – Rep. John Shaban (R-135) attended the ceremony on Tuesday to open the new extension of the Aspetuck Trail in Centennial Watershed State Forest. The new trail can be accessed from Route 58 in Easton, and now connects with the Saugatuck Trail in Redding. The entire trail system now reaches 18 miles – connecting Newtown, Easton, Redding and Weston -- and incorporates three scenic vistas overlooking the Saugatuck Reservoir.
More than 120 volunteers have been working since May 3rd on the project, which was a collaboration of Stewards of the Environment, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), The Nature Conservancy, the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA) and the Aquarion Water Company. Aquarion provides public water to over 625,000 people in 50 towns and cities throughout Connecticut. The Centennial Watershed State Forest trails course through over 15,300 acres of watershed land from which Aquarion extracts their public drinking water.
“The extension of the Centennial Watershed State Forest trails is a great supplement to our towns’ continuing effort to preserve the natural and historic character of the region,” said Rep. Shaban, Ranking Member of the Environment Committee. “It is encouraging to see various stake holders come together to promote conservation and ensure the reliable use of our natural resources.”
