Efforts to Save Norwalk's Only Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Continue

Whether you enjoy browsing the racks, grabbing a quick cup of coffee, or just setting up shop to cram for a midterm, Norwalk’s primary book venue is closing its doors after decades at the Connecticut Ave. location.

The chain apparently tried to work out a new lease, but according to Barnes & Noble’s Vice President of Development David Deason, Shop Rite’s new rent payment is just too high. “We are disappointed we will not be able to continue to operate this store in Norwalk, but we look forward to continuing to service our customers in the nearby Westport location and on BN.com.”

Local patrons can look forward to yet another liquor store taking over the lease come 2015, although a specific vendor hasn’t been publicly confirmed. A current manager at Barnes and Noble Norwalk, who has been working for the company for eight years, ensures that all employees are being transferred to either the Westport or Stamford locations.

The news comes as a blow to many local patrons, as many feel the store is a home away from home. A Facebook page was set up by everyday citizens in the past week in an effort to gather signatures and lobby against the closing. If you’d like to lend your support, the page can be found on Facebook at Save the Norwalk Barnes & Noble.

The B&N location was also home to local book group “Literary Soul Mates.” Group co-founder Katerina Begetis is deeply saddened by the news. “It’s a huge loss for the city. Our group has been meeting here for almost five years, and I know I speak for many when I say nothing can replace it. There is no other atmosphere for book lovers in Norwalk like Barnes & Noble.”

But as of now, if you are looking for a good deal on some of your favorite titles, there is currently a white dot sale going on which gives you 40% off selected items, with an extra 10% if you are a member.
