Woodcock Nature Center Kicks Off Feeding Frenzy Fundraiser

Did you know that Woodcock Nature Center is home to over 30 reptiles and amphibians and 4 non-releasable hawks and owls?

WNC's animal educators are an essential part of the nature center's programming. They teach visitors about habitats and animal behavior, they visit schools, and help campers learn to appreciate all of the creatures in our environment.

Working hard builds up an appetite: WNC's hawks and owls chow down on 120 mice and rats each week and their resident reptiles and amphibians eat over a pound of salad, 100 mealworms, and 7 dozen crickets weekly. Feeding the ambassador animals takes more than a nibble out of the nature center's annual budget.

Because the animals work so hard, the staff at Woodcock works hard to take care of them too, from making sure they see the veterinarian regularly to feeding a balanced diet and keeping the temperature just right in their environments. Making sure they get what they need costs close to $15,000 per year.

As a small nonprofit, this represents a significant cost to WNC. To help offset some of these costs, the nature center has kicked off a summer fundraiser called Feeding Frenzy. Members of the community are encouraged to donate -- any amount is appreciated and all donations are tax-deductible and can be made online here.

The animals at Woodcock would love to say ‘thank you’ in person. Stop by any time for a visit. It’s free and the animals love the attention!
