Developing life skills at a young age gives children an opportunity to explore, find, and create their passions. Summer at Wooster is very adamant about making sure that campers are given a proper introduction with accurate instruction and memorable experiences when exposing life skills. Confidence boosters here at Summer At Wooster are classes such as WiNK, the school's online paper, where campers are able to make videos and interviews; and theater, where campers are able to perform in front of the entire camp and showcase their talents. Other activities such as design and building skills are offered through the Makerspace program which gives campers a head start in fields like architecture, design, circuitry, and more. For the first time all summer long, cooking and baking classes are being offered for kids to explore the world of food and to learn new and healthy meals along with snacks to make at home.
The cooking class, being taught by Wooster's very own Robin Lindquist, incorporates kid-friendly recipes and food preparation basics to make kids feel more confident in the kitchen. They started their week with hand-washing (lots of soap and singing Happy Birthday twice) and knife safety. They then moved on to measuring, mixing, melting, whisking, and kneading. Recipes for the first week included fruit salad (with some exotic fruits included), bread, crepes, and ice cream with homemade toppings. The campers also made homemade butter to go with the bread and caramelized apples and whipped cream for their crepes. It was a delicious week and they will be exploring some new recipes during weeks six and seven. The baking class, Battle of the Cupcakes, modeled by the famous TV show Cupcake Wars, is taught by Anne Scoltes-Foscato, and incorporates baking along with decorating and display. Each day, the kids are able to help bake cupcakes, but more importantly, create a display to go along with the cupcakes. They are given a different theme everyday and compete to see who can create the best display for their cupcakes. Awards and acknowledgements are given and each student gets to bring home multiple beautifully made cupcakes and enjoy their delicious tastes!
