Redding Resident Missing After Swimming in South Africa

 

Redding resident and George Washington University Junior, Nick Upton was reported missing late Sunday after taking a break from studies and swimming in the Eastern Cape Province. 

George Washington University Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski put out the following statement:

Our study abroad program partner in Cape Town, South Africa has notified GW that one of our students traveling during a break in the program is missing. Junior Nicholas Upton has not been seen since swimming in the Eastern Cape Province on Sunday, August 30 at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time. Local authorities in Cape Town are conducting a search and are coordinating with program representatives, his family and the U.S. Embassy. We are closely monitoring this situation and are in touch with his family. We continue to hope and pray for Nicholas’ safe return.

Mr. Upton is a resident of Redding, CT and an international affairs major in GW's Elliott School of International Affairs.
