ARTalk: Successful Elements of Web and Graphic Design at the Ridgefield Library

On Sunday, October 23rd from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, Alex White and Brian Miller will discuss elements of succesful web and graphic design and also talk about their books, The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type, Second Edition and Above the Fold: Understanding the Principles of Successful Web Site Design, both of which were published in 2011, in the Dayton Program Room of the Ridgefield Library.

Alex and Brian will discuss how design and presentation affect a message, whether on paper or on screen. Both Brian and Alex are practicing designers and teachers. Alex teaches at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City, and Brian teaches at the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design at the University of Bridgeport in CT. They collaborate on projects and have both served on the Board of Directors of the Type Directors Club (tdc.org), the leading international organization that supports excellence in print and on screen typography. After the presentation, there will plenty of time for questions about web and paper design as well as art and design education. Signed copies of their books will be available for purchase.

Alex W. White:
Alex W. White is a designer, lecturer, and author. His has published six books, including: "The Elements of Graphic Design, Second Edition," "Advertising Design and Typography," and "Really Good Logos Explained." Alex teaches graduate design students at Parsons the New School for Design, and has taught at FIT, the Hartford Art School, the City College of New York, the University of Illinois, and the State University of New York. His speaks around the world about enhancing creativity in the service of the message and understanding how design affects targets’ needs. Alex has served as the chairman of the Type Directors Club and was the jury chair of the global type competition, TDC49. He holds an MFA in advertising design from Syracuse University and a BFA in graphic design from Kent State University.

Brian D. Miller:
Brian D. Miller is the owner and design director of the Brian Miller Design Group, an award-winning design studio that specializes in branding for the web and print. His clients include NBC Universal, Delta Airlines, GE, A&E Television and Rockstar Games. In addition to managing the Brian Miller Design Group, Brian is the author of a book about the web design titled "Above the Fold." He teaches design at the Shintaro Akatsu School of Design, and is a member of the board of directors for the Type Directors Club. Brian has an MPS in design management from Pratt Institute and a BFA in graphic design from the Hartford Art School.
