Gov Malloy: State Awarded $21M Federal Grant to Improve, Preserve Public Housing

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the State of Connecticut a grant of nearly $21 million to build, repair, renovate and modernize public housing units.

“This federal grant will build upon the initiatives we began last year and will continue into this year to address long-standing needed capital improvements for housing in our state,” Governor Malloy said.  “The availability of housing can go a long way into efforts to improve economic development and job creation, notably within the construction industry.”

The grants are provided through HUD’s Capital Fund Program and can be used to make large-scale improvements, such as new roofs and energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems.

Earlier this month, Governor Malloy announced a proposal to substantially increase the state’s commitment to affordable and supportive housing by building on last year’s investments and bringing the total investments to nearly $500 million over the next ten years.  The proposal was included in the Governor’s budget, which he delivered to the General Assembly on Wednesday.

“Revitalizing our communities through the creation of affordable housing will assist in efforts to make Connecticut a more vibrant place to work and live,” Governor Malloy said.  “My Administration is committed to improving the availability of affordable housing, recognizing its importance as an economic driver and the need to ensure workers have a safe neighborhood to raise their families.”
